How to recognise a fake job offer

Most employers are honest. These warning signs help you spot the few who are not.

Phone with a warning sign on the screen

Fake vacancies appear on every job site. They often target people who have just arrived in a new country. These signs are a reason to be careful.

Warning signs

  • You are asked to pay money to get the job, for a course or for a uniform.
  • The pay is much higher than for similar work, and the tasks are vague.
  • They want a copy of your passport or your bank details before you have even talked.
  • They put pressure on you: you must decide today.
  • There is no company name, no address and no phone number you can call.
  • Housing comes with the job, but you get no separate rental agreement, or the rent is taken from your pay without a written agreement.
  • The employer wants to keep your passport. That is never allowed.

What you can do

  • Look up the company in the Dutch Chamber of Commerce register (KvK).
  • Call the employer before you send documents.
  • Never pay to get a job.
  • Use the Report button on the vacancy. We look at reports and can take vacancies offline.

Are you being exploited or forced to work? In an emergency, call the police on 112. You can report exploitation to the Netherlands Labour Authority (Nederlandse Arbeidsinspectie) on its website, or anonymously to Meld Misdaad Anoniem on 0800 7000.
